You need to bring the following to that class/ time slot:

  • Your set designed on paper or using http://sketchup.google.com/ or any other programme you prefer.
  • Sketches of all your characters, from different angles. I want to see different positions and facial expressions, angles. THINK about the characters of the beings/ people in your film.
  • Reference material/ examples of fabric or whatever you envision to use in the construction of your set AND characters.
  • I will ask about your storyline/ plot etc so please work on this.

So the above is for my class/ time slot on 3 May.

For Nina’s class on 10 May she wants to see your storyboard and an animatic.

I will be unavailable to chat with you between 29 April and 2 May. So please book your time slot with me asap and any questions, send them through asap. Ok my lovely ones, have a great week.

See you 3 May.

Workshop Sat 30 April

As discussed in class, we will be having a creative workshop in the Auditorium on Saturday 30 April at 10:30 for +- 3 hours

For those of you who are feeling stuck with your film, this will help you get out of your rut. For those of you who are comfortable with your progress, use this as an opportunity to work on your puppets, props, set or storyboard. The idea is to generate more material for your film, around your peers, so that you can brainstorm, ask questions and problem solve.

Please bring:
pencils, paints, paper, reference material, magazines, cardboard, scissors, glue, any materials specific to your film etc.

Also, if you would like to be notified of Diek Grobler's next animation evening, be sure to "like" Flat 4 Studio's facebook page. They generally take place on the last Thursday of every month at Flat 4 in Eastwood St, near the Arcadia Cafe 41.

The first of many Film Festivals we will be telling you about

http://www2.outtheboxfestival.com/about/

This is a wonderful international Puppetry festival that is held in Cape Town every year. They have a film festival, Moving Things Film Festival, running at the same time. I have just spoken with their admin department and they gave me some details, in case you would like to apply with your film later this year (or perhaps only for next year)?

Date of both festivals: 3-11 September 2011

Deadline for applications: TBC soon, they say

Criteria: Any film containing puppets or stop motion is eligible. No CG. Any duration.

Whom to Contact: outthebox@unimasouthafrica.org OR If you happen to be in Cape Town, films should be sent to the UNIMA SA offices, (021) 4625811, dropped off with Justin for Yvette's attention.

Another great resource on Puppetry in SA is http://www.unimasouthafrica.org/

See you all tomorrow, ne? I’m bringing wonderful set design goodies J

The Sun and the Seed

Another animation by Jamie Caliri (of United Airlines Dragon and Heart commercials + co-creator of Dragon Stop-Motion)

The Sun and the Seed

This little film is just over 4 minutes long and the materials they used are pretty low-tech, but the film does everything it needs to do quite elegantly. With the skill-sets, time and materials you all have available already, there is nothing stopping you from achieving something of this quality or higher.

nuts and bolts

Not saying you have to attempt this intense tie-down technique, but the video does give you a good sense of how to bolt your puppets to your set:
